Video | Investigation into tyre flying loose towards Indy 500 crowd
- Toby McLuskie
There was a bit of a scare in the Indy500. Kyle Kirkwood crashed his car fully into the car of Felix Rosenqvist, who had hit the wall moments before. As Kirkwood crashed into the Swede, Kirkwoord's tyre catapulted towards the car park behind the grandstand. Fortunately, the tyre did not hit people, but it was by no means harmless. The tyre landed on a fan's car.
IndyCar owner Roger Penske says he is confident officials will investigate what caused a wheel to come off during the crash. " We haven't had a loose wheel in a long time," Penske told AP News. " We were lucky that the crash had no serious consequences," he added.
Fan dupe of flying tyre
For whom the accident did have unpleasant consequences was a spectator of the Indy 500. The tyre, which went over the fence, landed on her snow-white Chevrolet. The woman discovered her car had been hit after a friend showed her picture on the internet.
"I was like 'shut up,' because I didn't believe him. I thought it was a joke. He said 'it's your car,' and showed me a picture and immediately I was shaking, because I was just anxious and nervous," the spectator said in an interview with WTHR. Fortunately, the fan in question can still laugh a bit about it. "The name of my car is 'Snowball' and they took one for the team".
