Jos Verstappen on son Max: 'That's his strength'
- Cas van de Kleut
Max Verstappen is currently dominant in Formula 1. He currently has two world titles to his name, and surely it now seems a certainty that a third title will be added this year. Father Jos Verstappen has had a big part in his son's success. He was a guest on the F1 Nation podcast.
- After Jos' career ended, he shifted his focus to Max's career. He was very hard on his son. In his karting career, the Red Bull driver already had several world titles to his name, before moving into Formula 3 at 16. The move to Formula 2 would never be made, as Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko decided to move young Max to Torro Rosso at just 17. The following year, mid-season, it was decided that the now 44-time race winner could drive for the great Red Bull Racing. The rest is history.
Jos Verstappen on Max's strongest point
Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Dutchman has become one of the greatest drivers in the sport of all time. Jos says: "During the week, he doesn't want to know anything about Formula 1, and then when the weekend is there, he's there. And I think that's what he wants. When he's there, he's focused, but when the race is finished, it's done. That's his strength."
Jos is then asked what changes he sees in his son compared to years past, when he was just working towards Formula 1: "For me, Max hasn't changed. At home, he's on a sim. He loves that, and he's still very easy-going. I don't see any change with him, and it's just like how things are going. The team have built a fantastic car, and he's putting the effort in, and it comes out, and that's good to see."
