Perez in future in Formula E? 'We are waiting for him with open arms'
- Sam Godber
Sergio Perez is still locked in Formula 1 with Red Bull Racing until 2024, but if the Mexican loses his seat at the Austrian racing stable and does not find shelter elsewhere, the Mexican knows where he can. Indeed, Alberto Longo, co-founder of Formula E, has indicated that he would welcome Perez to the electric class with an open mind.
Longo and Perez know each other well. The now 33-year-old driver raced in GP2 in 2009 for Addax, where Longo was the team boss at the time. "'Checo' is a personal friend [...] Every week, every 10 days, I send him a message saying that we love him very much and that we are always waiting for him when he finishes his career in Formula 1."
Formula E and Mexico are no strangers to each other. Chava Durán and Esteban Gutiérrez have raced in Formula E before, and every year the FE circus also travels to Mexico City for the ePrix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The electric class is very popular in Mexico, with the races often attracting more than 40,000 spectators.

"We wait with open arms for 'Checo' when he gets tired of driving in Formula 1," Longo says in conversation with the ESTO newspaper . Finally, he reveals his regret that in Formula 1, opportunities for drivers are often dictated by a bag of money. "In all of motorsport, unfortunately, we are killing the talent of drivers. This is due to the simple fact that money is demanded to race in different cars and teams. For me, that is not a sport."
