Dutch GP sets record: most overtakes ever in an F1 race
- Sam Godber
The 2023 edition of the Dutch Grand Prix broke a Formula 1 record. The race at Circuit Zandvoort was chaotic due to two huge rain showers, and this made for a lot of spectacle: never before have there been so many overtaking actions during a race.
Dutch GP sets record
Circuit Zandvoort is known as a track where overtaking is very difficult because of the limited straights and many corners. Overtaking was quite manageable during the 2023 edition due to the changeable conditions, figures show. A Reddit user in fact looked into how many overtaking manoeuvres were carried out during the Dutch GP, and it turned out there were no less than 186, which is a record. This number is exclusive pitstops and lap 1 overtakes. Of these 186 overtaking actions, 59 were broadcast live. Of this large number of overtaking actions, Fernando Alonso performed the most with 13.
Earlier, the record stood in the name of the Grand Prix in China. During the 2016 edition, there were as many as 170 overtakes. The Chinese Grand Prix was last held in 2019 due to coronavirus problems in the country. In 2024, however, the Chinese Grand Prix will be back on the Formula 1 calendar.
Another record for Dutch GP
More than a third of all overtaking was carried out in a single lap. The third lap of the Dutch GP, in which there was a lot of rain, counted no less than 63 overtaking actions. This is also a new record, as never before have so many overtaking actions been carried out in one lap. The previous record stood at 45 overtakes.
