Max Verstappen tops the tables in FP2 in the Japanese Grand Prix
- Sam Godber
Max Verstappen is back to prove a point after Singapore's disappointment as the Dutchman topped the tables in FP2 in the Japanese Grand Prix.
Verstappen back to the top
Suzuka is one of the most complete circuits on the calendar, where aerodynamics, mechanics and power units all make the difference around a single lap. This played into the hands of reigning champion Verstappen. The Dutchman is on a mission, and another flawless practice session saw him pump out the fastest lap just when others thought they were clear. It was a disappointing Grand Prix on the whole for Red Bull in Singapore, but Verstappen returns to his common P1 in FP2.
Promising signs
Ferrari were very impressive throughout, especially Charles Leclerc as the Monegasque driver was impressive on all tyre compounds with their newly upgraded floor, they were never off the pace. Two-tenths separated the two teammates with Carlos Sainz finishing fourth.
Norris was best of the British drivers as he looked on top form throughout the session, putting competitive times in whether on mediums or soft tyre compound as he took up P3 in what looked a much stronger Mclaren Car. George Russell was close behind his fellow Brit in P5 as he was 0.6 seconds off the leader. This could be seen as a positive statement from the Mercedes car after a disappointing FP1. The Mercedes team worked on a setup change in the lunch break after FP1, although Lewis Hamilton struggled in his Mercedes car as he finished P14.
Alonso showed some speed in his Aston Martin as he finished P6. It shapes up to be a better weekend for the Aston Martin team as pace has shown promise for both drivers. Likewise, the impressive Alex Albon saw him take his Williams to P7.
