For years, Lewis Hamilton drank a lot of champagne. A lot of champagne. But since Max Verstappen took over the reigns in Formula 1, the Brit has been able to make his way to the podium much less often, to uncork a bottle of Ferrari Trento. Even off the podium, Hamilton refrains from alcohol these days, the Mercedes driver told Vogue.

For several years, Hamilton has been on a diet entirely based on plants. Everything to arrive at the start of Grands Prix as fit and well as possible. In the eyes of the seven-time champion, no alcoholic refreshments fit such a strict diet, Hamilton stated in the fashion magazine.

Hamilton feels sober and better

The driver said he started drinking when he was 16. "I’ll suffer for several days—sometimes it’ll be like three or four days," Hamilton said of the hangover left over from drinking. And that again did not suit the life of a top athlete. "I’ve always been looking for how do you get that extra 1%? As an athlete, that’s what you are always doing.”

Hamilton says he hasn't had an alcoholic drink for four months: "I don't know if I'm going to drink again," he said of his new approach. "Since I stopped drinking, I feel so much better, so much clearer. I sleep better, I wake up and I can still get up at 5am," he said of his sleep routine.

Hamilton does drink tequila more often these days. Not entirely coincidentally, the Brit has developed his own tequila - without alcohol in it, of course.
