Why Adrian Newey has left Red Bull

Why Newey has chosen to leave Red Bull Racing

Since news broke that Adrian Newey is to leave Red Bull Racing, there have been many questions about his future. Sky Sports reporter Craig Slater thinks he knows why Newey is leaving the Austrian team.

Retirement or another team

According to Craig Slater, Adrian Newey is completely fed up with the power struggle behind the scenes. According to the reporter, Newey tried to leave the team back in May last year, but Christian Horner made sure the Brit stayed. "This friction between Salzburg where Red Bull's head offices are, and the Formula One team base at Milton Keynes and also the wider friction between the the Thai majority ownership and the Austrian 49% minority ownership but that power struggle has made it a difficult working environment for Newey," Slater said. "Additionally, Newey is not a fan of the Netflix era of Formula One which is so much in the spotlight and there's so much commercial focus as well."

While there is much speculation about Newey's next move, Slater says Newey has indicated to Red Bull that he has not yet signed for another team. "He would not have a shortage of offers and we certainly know of of interest from Ferrari and interest from Aston Martin," Slater said. "Well-placed sources at Aston Martin felt that if Newey were to go elsewhere, Ferrari was the more enticing proposition for him. But I've spoken to a number of people close to Adrian Newey who understand that it's going to be a matter of weeks before he himself makes up his mind about what to do next, and retirement isn't out of the question either.

It is uncertain whether Newey will want to move to Italy if he joins Ferrari. Newey will stay at Red Bull until early 2025, but his plans after that are not yet known.
