Qualifying for the sprint race turned out to be a winner for
Max Verstappen. In the first free practice for the
Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen was already the fastest, so he was able to follow that up.
After SQ1, it was the end of the story for
Williams drivers
Logan Sargeant and
Alexander Albon. Sargeant is driving a Grand Prix at home this weekend but got some nasty news before the sprint shootout. Stake
F1 drivers
Valtteri Bottas and
Guanyu Zhou also failed to progress beyond the first part of sprint qualifying. Unlike
Esteban Ocon,
Pierre Gasly did not save SQ2.
Verstappen stayed inside for the first part of SQ2 before entering the track late. The Dutchman could not afford any mistakes on the only lap he drove. His time was good enough to enter SQ3.
Lewis Hamilton and
George Russell did not finish in the top ten during SQ2.
