As Formula 1 travels to Imola for the next race, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, there will be lots of sentiment surrounding the weekend. This Grand Prix will mark 30 years since the horrific accident and the tragic passing of Ayrton Senna, one of the greatest drivers that F1 has ever seen. The late great Brazilian passed away after crashing at Imola in 1994, and now as F1 returns in 2024, there will be many tributes from teams and drivers, and Alpine driver Pierre Gasly will be one.

Gasly to race with a special helmet to 'remember Ayrton's legacy'

Although Senna's career in Formula 1 was cut far too short, he has had a huge impact in and out of F1 in many ways. The three-time World Champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991 earned 41 Grand Prix victories in an illustrious career in the premier class of motorsport. Outside of F1, the Brazilian was a hero in his country, and his charity work is still hugely beneficial in the world today, with the Instituto Ayrton Senna supporting children's education in Brazil.

As a result, many drivers are still inspired by Senna today, and that includes Gasly. Next weekend at Imola, the Frenchman will race with a specially designed helmet that incorporates the iconic colours of Senna's helmet, the green and yellow of Brazil. Gasly announced this on his Instagram profile, which shows him wearing the helmet and also driving in Senna's first-ever F1 car, a Toleman 1984.

"I’m going to pay tribute to one of the best F1 drivers of all time in Imola/one of my idols," said Gasly. "I’ll be wearing a special Senna helmet design to remember Ayrton’s legacy. It was an incredible experience and feeling to be sat in his car with this special helmet."

The 28-year-old also said the helmet will be sold at auction after the race, with the money going to the Instituto Ayrton Senna.
