Since joining the F1 grid in 2023, Australian driver Oscar Piastri has made quite the impression. However, he is yet to secure his first Grand Prix win. Nevertheless, following his second place finish in Monaco this season, it looks like he could be getting closer. Speaking on the Stompcast with Dr Alex George podcast, the McLaren driver explained how the team are getting closer to their goals, and how he aims to secure his first F1 win.

Since joining McLaren in 2023, Piastri has featured on the podium three times, including in Japan and Qatar last season, and now Monaco in 2024. The Australian driver knows what that winning feeling feels like, after winning the Formula 2 Championship with Prema Racing in 2021. For Piastri, he defined his as a "very proud moment". Now, he explains his next aims: "My aim is to win races and win championships," he began. "I know what I need to do to improve to get to that point and you know, no one else needs to tell me that."

"It was the same in all my junior categories and the pressure of getting into Formula One, you know, you've got so many people saying, are you going to be the next big thing? Are you even going to make it to Formula One? There's always the pressure of that, but I wanted to get to Formula One for myself. I didn't really care what other people were saying," he added.

Can McLaren win again?

Ahead of signing with McLaren, Piastri was the reserve driver for F1 team Alpine. Nevertheless, Piastri seems happy with his decision to continue racing with the British team, having signed a contract extension until the end of 2026. He is even confident the team has what it takes to work towards their goal of winning the Constructors: "We've been building towards this for, you know, probably certainly six months, getting closer to 12 months now since when we put our first bit of upgrades on halfway through last year. You know, we've been aiming towards this. We're getting closer and closer."

"When we got the first podium, I remember how excited everyone was. And then quickly that was becoming more and more normal. And the win [Lando Norris'] was the next thing we wanted. So to finally have that, I think, is a great achievement," Piastri concluded.
