FIA showcase plans for new F1 regulations in 2026: This is what will change

New regulations for Formula 1 will go into effect in 2026. The FIA unveiled these regulations on Thursday afternoon, June 6. Many fans already wanted the cars to be narrower. The new car for the 2026 season is as much as 30 kilos lighter, 200 millimetres shorter, and 100 millimetres narrower.
“The 'agile car' concept at the heart of the 2026 technical regulations is aimed at better racing performance and closer racing,” the FIA explains. The cars will be no less than thirty kilos lighter. Overtaking also becomes easier. “Increased overtaking options thanks to the new Manual Override Mode, which allows more electric power to be used for the following car,” the FIA stated.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem responds
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is proud of the developments within the premier class of motorsport. “Today the FIA is defining a hugely exciting future for the pinnacle of motorsport with the launch of comprehensive new regulations for the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship and beyond.”
“The key features of the 2026 F1 regulations are advanced, sustainable technology and safety. Our goal was to work with Formula 1 to create a car that is suitable for the future of the elite category of the sport. We believe we have achieved that goal,” concludes Ben Sulayem.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, is also extremely enthusiastic. “These regulations mark an important moment in the future of our sport, as we look forward to a new generation of cars and power units that will deliver exciting racing to our fans,” he explains. “The lower fuel has the potential to be used by cars around the world and dramatically reduce emissions. The potential is one of the main reasons why we will have a record number of engine suppliers in Formula 1 by 2026,” says Domenicali.
