Perez at wit's end after qualifying in Canada: 'It was a total disaster!'
Qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix went very disastrously for Sergio Perez. The Mexican signed a new two-year deal with Red Bull Racing earlier this week. Despite something that might have given an extra boost, Perez finished P16, and to his own regret did not even make it into Q3 of qualifying.
What went wrong for Perez in his RB20?
Just before the end of Q1, Perez improved his time taking him to P12. Some drivers had yet to cross the finish line, so it was waiting for the message that the Guadalajara-based driver had been eliminated. Speaking after qualifying, Perez said, "I think it was more down to the tyres and the car than it was something with the kerbstones."
But then what exactly was wrong with the Red Bull driver's RB20? "The main thing was really to get to switch on the rear axle for me was quite tricky and I ended up paying the price with it because basically I just had no grip. I was sliding too much around it. I thought that was a total disaster.," Perez explained.
What can Perez do during the race?
Perez will have to play catch-up to try and get on the podium during Sunday's race which starts at 19:00 BST. "It's a total disaster, but we will see what happens (in the race, ed.). We'll see what happens with the weather and what we can do with the strategy as well." Teammate Max Verstappen starts from P2 behind George Russell.
