Marko confirms ultimatum for Perez: 'After that we'll see'
- Ludo van Denderen
Helmut Marko - Red Bull Racing's external advisor - even writes to the word 'thank God' when talking about the upgrades his team are bringing to the Hungarian Grand Prix. Indeed, these have been difficult months for the Austrian team, with a once hefty lead over the competition melting away. But with the upgrades, Marko states in his column at Speedweek, Red Bull hope to take another step forward.
The Austrian also realises that not every upgrade brings the desired result. Already earlier this season, Red Bull introduced novelties, but they did not make Max Verstappen's and Sergio Perez's cars much faster, About the upcoming updates, Marko says: "What is certain: The update must work, because in the base we are behind McLaren - and if you look at the race in the UK, also behind Mercedes."
It will be very hot in Hungary, which might be to Red Bull's advantage. Marko says the heat is not the most important factor, for him the fact is that Red Bull must first make sure they have the fastest car again. The Austrian does say one thing was lucky for his team: "Of course it helps us that Red Bull Racing's opponents take turns at the top, but we cannot rely on that."
"I also think Ferrari is no longer playing at the top. And we have to be able to win on our own again, that's the goal. There are still 12 race weekends ahead of us and we cannot rely on the fact that there are always others behind us and now in front of us, and that we will take advantage of that," Marko said.
Evaluation of Sergio Perez in summer break
Moreover, Marko once again puts driver Sergio Perez under more pressure. According to Marko, two drivers are needed to win the constructors' title. "We still hope that Sergio Perez regains his form. We will evaluate the situation after the next two races during the summer break and then we will see what happens," Marko confirmed the ultimatum given to the Mexican.
