Russell teaches Hamilton a lesson again: 'Could've done that as well'
Lewis Hamilton attacked his teammate in the closing stages of the race but could not overtake George Russell to win the Belgian Grand Prix. It was somewhat of a surprise because Hamilton had a significant tyre advantage over Russell. He believes he could've done the one-stop as well.
Hamilton completed a two-stop, but Russell opted for the one-stop. In the end, the Mercedes strategy team decided, but Russell asked them to consider it from the cockpit. In the green room after the Belgian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton had a conversation. The Australian was surprised Russell managed to make it work.
"I can't believe he [Russell] actually managed to make it work," Piastri told Hamilton before the seven-time World Champion claimed he should've done the same thing. "My tyres were fine in all stints. I think I could have done it as well," Hamilton replied.
How did Russell and Piastri react to Red Bull's progress?
In years gone by, Verstappen has taken an engine penalty and found himself winning the Belgian Grand Prix, but the Dutchman did not get further than fifth place in 2024 when starting from P11. The podium finishers were surprised by this.
"I thought Max was going to be a bit quicker than that," Piastri said. Russell arrived and agreed. "I'm surprised the Red Bulls didn't come through more. The medium wasn't the right choice," Russell said.
