Norris furious with himself: 'Lost many points for stupid stuff'
Lando Norris dropped points to Max Verstappen in the World Championship after finishing behind in the Belgian Grand Prix. The British driver heads into the summer break beating himself up and is furious about his own performance. Norris now has a 78 point deficit to Verstappen with 10 races remaining.
Norris crossed the finish line in sixth, which later turned to fifth after George Russell was disqualified. Norris actually started ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri, who managed to finish on the podium for the second week running. That actually turned into P2.
Why Norris is furious with himself
Norris dropped back immediately at the start and found himself running in seventh at the end of the first lap. In fact, by lap two, Verstappen was already on his tail after the two started seven places apart. He reflected on the broader picture of losing more points to Verstappen. "I've given away a lot of points over the last three or four races just because of stupid stuff, mistakes, and bad starts, turn one now too. I don't know why, it's just silly things, it's not even difficult stuff," Norris told GPblog and others in the paddock.
He explained what went wrong at the start: "Just turn one, trying to stay out of trouble, trying to make sure there's a gap. Then I put myself off the track. Just some stupid things. The pace is good, and the team are doing an amazing job, so I'm happy," he continued.
Formula 1 now heads into it's traditional summer break, and racing will return at the end of August in Zandvoort. "We all need [the break]. I need to reset. In a way, I feel like I just don't want to take a break. I just want to continue because we're in good form. Even today, I feel like the pace was very strong. I’ve just not clicked as much as I needed to and given up a lot of points, so hopefully, I can come back strong," he added.
