Sargeant is ousted from Williams: This driver will replace him immediately
Logan Sargeant has been ousted from his seat at Williams and will no longer compete in the 2024 Formula 1 season. Williams have confirmed that Franco Colapinto will complete the rest of the season on behalf of Williams. He will join Alex Albon at the team.
Sargeant has struggled to match Albon throughout his career at Williams. After the summer break, the American returned to the cockpit but crashed heavily in FP3. It was a costly mistake, as he was driving with the upgrades. Williams have, therefore, decided to push Sargeant aside and replace him with Franco Colapinto.
The Williams team thanked Logan Sargeant for his hard work and contribution over the past two seasons in a statement published on Tuesday afternoon. The change comes into play immediately. Colapinto will make his debut at the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
No Lawson and no Schumacher
It was no longer a surprise that Logan Sargeant would be sidelined by Williams, but it was that Colapinto would be allowed to replace him. The Argentinian has no experience in Formula 1, except for a one-time participation in FP1. Up until now, Colapinto has competed in Formula 2, where he has impressed at times. This season he won one race in this class. Colapinto drove for the Dutch MP Motorsport.
Sargeant's F1 career is, therefore, coming to an end. After the crash, team boss James Vowles was at Red Bull Racing to discuss hiring Liam Lawson. But the Austrians wanted to be able to bring Lawson back at any time, and Williams could not agree to that.
Mick Schumacher was also considered. The German was put forward by Mercedes - where he is a reserve driver - as the logical replacement for Sargeant. But Williams still chose a driver who was already active in their own Academy. In his home country Argentina, Colapinto is very popular.
