Newey has decided: Aston Martin deal is done and will be announced soon
- Ludo van Denderen
There was speculation for many months: Where will Adrian Newey continue his career after closing the Red Bull Racing door behind him? Ferrari was mentioned, and Williams admitted to being keen to sign the successful designer. However, it will eventually be Aston Martin where Newey will take the next step in his career. GPblog can confirm that the deal is complete and will be officially announced within days.
This ends a long-running storyline that has gripped Formula 1. Why Newey ultimately chose Aston Martin will no doubt become clear after the announcement. A certain factor is that the British racing team are currently investing heavily in their facilities, with a new factory and wind tunnels being the headline features.
In addition, Newey does not have to move to, say, Italy. The hefty salary Aston Martin has offered him has probably also played a role. Finally, Newey continues to work with Honda, the engine supplier with which he had great success at Red Bull Racing.
Blow to Hamilton's aspirations at Ferrari
Ferrari will miss out on Newey and the Brit will not work with Lewis Hamilton when the seven-time World Champion moves to the team for 2025. The Italian team saw it coming for a while. In Monza, Fred Vasseur indicated that in the very near future more will be known about some additions to his technical staff at his team too - and Adrian Newey is not part of it.
Another driver who is frustrated that Newey has chosen Aston Martin is Max Verstappen. The Briton would have stayed at Red Bull team if it had been up to the Dutch driver. He spoke to GPblog and others about this: "I've always said that I would have liked for Adrian to stay, always. But it's not about that now. Last year, we had a great car, which was the most dominant car ever and we basically turned it into a monster. So we have to turn it around."
