George Russell reviews crash during Mexican Grand Prix FP2 session

George Russell has explained what happened during his crash in the second free practice session. The Mercedes driver lost control of his car and hit the barrier at high speed. Russell had to visit the medical centre but was later discharged.

It's Russell's second accident since last Saturday. In qualifying for the United States Grand Prix, Russell lost control of the car and hit the wall. His teammate Lewis Hamilton had a spin during the race and retired from the Grand Prix. Russell has now had trouble in Mexico.

What happened to Russell in FP2?

Russell reflected on the incident after the session with F1TV. "The car just started bouncing off the ground and before I even had a chance to catch it, I was already spinning. A lot of work for us tonight. Just seems like it's one thing after another at the moment," Russell said.

The British driver topped FP1 by three-tenths. "It's frustrating as FP1 we're really strong, really fast. Trying to take the same line, cutting that corner and for whatever reason on this occasion FP2 started going off. Because it was the Pirelli tyre test it wasn't hugely valuable in terms of what you'd learn going into the race weekend. FP3 is gonna be important. Just hope we can get the car fixed," Russell said.

Mercedes will also examine the data from Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who replaced Lewis Hamilton during the first free practice session. The 18-year-old finished 12th fastest in that session. Most of Hamilton's time on track happened during the Pirelli tyre test, but he did get less than a handful of laps on the medium tyres at the end of FP2.
