McLaren confirm Alonso Indy500 number ahead of triple crown attempt
- Jake Williams-Smith
McLaren has unveiled Fernando Alonso's Indy500 number as 66 ahead of the Spaniards attempt to win the Indy500 and become only the second driver in history to complete motorsport's Triple Crown.
Alonso will use the number 66 as a tribute to the 66 car used by Mark Donohue’s Penske-run M16 in 1972, which won two races that year at Pocono and Michigan.
The two-time Formula One champion will be hoping for a longer-lasting attempt this year after his Honda-powered Andretti car expired after a strong rookie showing on his IndyCar debut.
I will race the historic number 66 at this year's #Indy500, honouring McLaren's first success at the Brickyard with the M16 back in 1972. #mclaren #indy500 #Alo66 #routetoIndy pic.twitter.com/FiWwTrij7y
