Sergio Perez, unemployed driver: Is there still a way back to F1?

Sergio Perez is no longer a Formula 1 driver after leaving Red Bull Racing. Is it a definitive farewell to the sport? According to his father, yes, but he has often told incorrect things afterwards. If Sergio Perez himself still has hope for a continuation of his F1 career, where would that be?

Christian Horner indicated on Wednesday that Perez is taking 'a sabbatical' after he himself decided to stop as an active driver for Red Bull Racing. Perez originally planned to be active in Formula 1 until the end of 2026, but the options for that season are limited. A seat at one of the top teams is unrealistic, and so Perez - as stated if he wants to make a comeback - will focus on the midfield and the backmarkers.

Cadillac an option for Perez?

The most logical place for Perez would be the new Cadillac team. The Americans are looking for an experienced F1 driver for their debut season in the sport and Perez would be the ideal reinforcement with his knowledge. He is also a sponsor magnet, with undoubtedly a lot of Mexican sponsors who would commit to Cadillac. Moreover, having a Mexican in the car is invaluable to Cadillac, as that would certainly boost the brand's car sales.

Frankly, it seems hard to imagine that any of the current teams would want to sign Perez for 2026 (and possibly beyond). If they were to consider the Mexican, it would be more likely in a reserve and test driver role, in the same way that Valtteri Bottas will do for Mercedes next season. In addition, Perez would be an ideal ambassador for an F1 team, again bringing in extra sponsorship.

Perez in IndyCar or IMSA

If Perez wants to continue his racing career, it would be more obvious that he will look at a different class than Formula 1. As a Mexican, he can probably quickly find a place in IndyCar; a class that is extremely popular in the country. But does Perez feel like flying over ovals at dizzying speeds? IMSA - the American counterpart of the World Endurance Championship - will certainly welcome him with open arms.

Undoubtedly, Perez will think about his future in peace in the coming period. There is no rush because all decent places for 2025 are filled. So a new opportunity can really only arise in 2026.
