Alonso after disappointing year in Formula One: 'We were hoping for more'
- Estéban den Toom
Fernando Alonso had a difficult year in Formula 1. The 43-year-old Spaniard finished ninth in the drivers' championship. The Aston Martin team finished P5, behind McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes. In Abu Dhabi, he explained how the season went for him and which race was his best.
"We cannot rate ourselves too high. I think we've been fighting with the tools we had on track. I think we maximised the results. To secure fifth place is the minimum that we had to do in terms of expectations and after what we had last year. I'm happy to finish at least in the minimum requirements but in a way we were hoping for more especially at the beginning of the year," Alonso told GPblog and other media.
Best race of the season for Alonso
"We started strong and there were a couple of upgrades coming to the car that we were dreaming to finish high and maybe fighting for podiums or something. We didn't achieve that. That's the reality. We were expecting a little bit more. This is what it is and hopefully next year we can achieve that," Alonso said.
All in all, it was not an easy year for Alonso and Aston Martin. Next season, the constructor will count on Adrian Newey's services, who will make the switch to Lawrence Stroll's Silverstone factory come March 2025. Alonso then concluded with his choice of which was his best race of the season: "The best drive was Monza for the race. China for qualifying."
