Former Formula One World Champion and racing legend Michael Schumacher celebrates his birthday today. The legendary German driver, who raced in 308 Grands Prix from 1991 to 2006 and from 2010 to 2012, turned 56 today.

F1 honours Schumacher on 56th birthday

Schumacher is recognised worldwide as one of the best Formula 1 drivers of all time. The German driver made his debut for Jordan's team in 1991 and soon after left for Benetton, where he celebrated his first successes. In 1994 and 1995, he captured his first two world titles and soon left for Ferrari, where he grew into a legend after a few difficult years. From 2000 to 2004, Schumacher took five world titles there and still holds the record for most world titles together with Lewis Hamilton.

After the 2006 season, Schumacher retired from F1 but returned to Mercedes in 2010.  Schumacher did not manage to win a single Grand Prix with the team and bode farewell once again after 2012.

In total, Schumacher drove in 308 races, of which he won 91, scored 155 podium finishes and achieved seven world titles. The German driver will forever be known as one of the sport's best-ever athletes.

In December 2013, the world was rocked after Schumacher ended up in hospital after a serious skiing accident. Since the tragic accident, little to nothing has been announced about the racing legend's recovery.
