Montoya claims Red Bull burns their drivers, Coulthard is the best example
Juan Pablo Montoya, on podcast Montoy'as, has revealed that he had an offer from Red Bull Racing to extend his F1 career, however, he decided not to, due to the danger the team would 'burn' him, as they have done, in his opinion, with other drivers, citing current Red Bull ambassador, David Coulthard, as the prime example.
After a successful stint in F1, the Colombian former F1 driver ran into trouble following a complicated period with McLaren. At this time, he claims to have had three offers on the table from Indycar, Nascar and F1, but it made little sense for him to stay in the top car racing series in the world. "The only thing I really needed in F1 was to be a champion. And there wasn't an opportunity to be in a car to be a champion."
'Red Bull burns their drivers'
The offer to extend his F1 career was from Red Bull Racing, however Montoya dismissed it as it was a "2 pesos" (cheap, ed.) offer. But also because according to the Colombian, Red Bull 'burns' its drivers. "Red Bull offered me two pesos and it took them four years to win. They would have burnt me," stated the Colombian.
"By the time Red Bull was ready [to fight for the championship] they would probably have [done], like they did with the rest of the drivers, blamed the driver and gone and put the next one in," adding that such is the reality in F1.
"And the best example is Coulthard. What did Coulthard do at Red Bull? Coulthard took the seat that was mine, if I wanted it," concluded Montoya. During a three year spell at Red Bull, the Scottsman secured two podium finishes and a best finishing positions in the overall standings of 10th.
