Red Bull mechanic debunks misconception: 'It's not like that at all!'

At Red Bull Racing, Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson benefit from a dedicated team of professionals focused on optimising their cars. Among them is Senior Power Unit Assembly Technician Calum Nicholas, who plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing performance. In an interview on the DrivenByUs podcast, Nicholas shared insights into the strong bond between the drivers and mechanics within the Red Bull team, emphasising the mutual respect and collaboration that fuel their success.
Although only two drivers represent each team on the track, a large team works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure success. At Red Bull Racing, victories are a collective achievement celebrated by everyone involved. A memorable example is Max Verstappen's first world championship win in Abu Dhabi in 2021, when the entire crew of mechanics left the garage to celebrate together in the pit lane, showcasing the unity within the team.
The hard-working bond at Red Bull
Nicholas explained that there is a close relationship between Red Bull drivers and mechanics, although some believe that there isn't: "I don't know if it's just a team thing because I speak to friends of mine who work at other teams. They always say that the relationships are always good. I think people are really surprised by that. People think that the drivers rock up and drive, but it's not like that at all. They're always going to be in and around the garage. You chat with them about things, and you take a personal interest. I think anyone who you spend so much time with over the course of all these years it would be odd if you don't build a relationship."
Nicholas was reminded that the team often appears like a close-knit family. Responding to this, he said, "I think we are a very close unit. I think what we've done well with the team is that it's not just about everyone's technical skills, but the soft skills, their personalities, that make the team so strong."
