Just weeks after the FIA announced it was going to heavily penalise drivers when they swear, it emerged during Formula E's recent Saudi Arabian weekend that swearing over team radio does not attract a penalty. Liam Lawson commented on the FIA's swearing ban, saying that he was glad drivers wouldn't be punished in the car. Still, he explained that drivers should control their language outside of a racing situation.
Dan Ticktum’s outburst over team radio went unpunished, as it was deemed an emotional reaction in the heat of competition. However, WRC driver Adrien Fourmaux faced a penalty for swearing during an interview the day before.
Lawson is content with FIA's precedent
Liam Lawson is not known as someone who loses his cool behind the wheel. When asked, however, the Red Bull Racing driver thinks it is a good thing that the FIA does not punish drivers who swear in the heat of battle. "I think so," he told GPblog and others in London about this.
"I mean, I can't speak for everybody, but for me when you have a lot of adrenaline and you're obviously doing 200 plus miles an hour wheel to wheel and in those moments you're obviously going to be under a lot of stress, a lot of pressure.
"And I think just with that level of adrenaline you might say certain words, but I think out of the car obviously it's our job to control that. So I think in a way it's not something that I have, I haven't really been in the sport long enough to comment too much on it. I trust what the others say."
