BREAKING: Williams score their first point in 2019 after Alfa are penalised!
- Nicolás Quarles van Ufford
Williams have scored their first championship point of the season as both Alfa Romeo Racing cars have been penalised with 30 seconds, meaning both Kimi Raikkonen as well as Antonio Giovinazzi will be stripped of their points after finishing seventh and eighth respectively.
The 30-second penalty sees them drop all the way down to P12 and P13, the last two places of the cars that finished. The reason for the penalty was that both Alfa cars were equipped with a clutch that had a 200-millisecond lag, which allowed for a smoother start, in a sense mimicking traction control. The lag is 70 milliseconds maximum, according to the rules. Especially in wet conditions, this gives a big advantage.
For the full explanation from the stewards, have a look at the second tweet listed below.
It means Romain Grosjean moves up from P9 to P7, Kevin Magnussen from P10 to P8, Lewis Hamilton from P11 to P9, Robert Kubica from P12 to P10 and George Russell from P13 to P11.
It's Kubica's first point in F1 since making his comeback to the sport after eight years of absence.
