Russell hopes one day to be able to compete: "I have a link with Mercedes"
- GPblog.com
George Russell is one of the 'newcomers' in Formula 1 who hasn't been able to show much of himself yet. Where Charles Leclerc drives for Ferrari, Lando Norris for McLaren and Alexander Albon for Red Bull Racing, the driver is not in a favourable position. This is mainly due to the weak performance of Williams so far, but Russell has a trump card.
Difficult time
In Sky Sports' Vodcast, Russell is asked what he's going to do to be able to fight with the other young drivers again. In his answer he remains honest and says that there isn't much to achieve at the moment, but that he remains hopeful. "I don't really know if I'm being honest, but I have a contract with Williams and it's no secret we're going through a difficult time.
"The team is doing everything they can to get through this, the situation of the last few years, they are trying to produce a better car for me and Nicholas (Latifi). But I'm lucky to be linked to Mercedes, so who knows. But at the moment I'm focusing on my work and what will come, that will come".
Future at Mercedes?
In other words, he says that he could be an option for Mercedes in the future if the situation at Williams does not improve. If he ends up at Mercedes and they are still strong, he will finally be in a position to compete against the guys he grew up with.
Valtteri Bottas' contract expires at the end of this year and Lewis Hamilton's future is still a bit uncertain. Now there's a pretty good chance that the six-time world champion at Mercedes will stay, but if Bottas doesn't get a new contract, there will be a place for Russell. It remains to be seen whether that will happen... for now we are waiting for the start of the current season.
