Mercedes has long been king of qualifying with their special party mode. During the final part of qualifying, the German team turned on this mode, which allowed them to use more fuel and put more strain on their engine. As a result, they won considerably on the other teams. However, this mode could not be used for a longer period of time, because that would require too much of the engine.

If it is up to the FIA, Mercedes will lose this advantage next year. Racefans.net reports that the FIA already wants to abandon this special mode next year. The FIA therefore sent a letter to the teams.

In this letter, which is confirmed by multiple sources, the FIA described its intention to clarify the use of the modes for the 2021 F1 season by stipulating that the performance settings used by the teams in qualifying must be the same as those used in the race. The requirement could be enforced using the existing parc ferme regulations that limit changes in set-up between sessions.
