Lewis Hamilton seemed to be heading for a simple victory in the Italian Grand Prix. That is now going to be a lot harder for the Briton, because he has been given a hefty time penalty for an illegal pit stop.

During the Italian Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen had to end his race after 'something' broke off on his car. Because his car was parked right in front of the pit lane and there was little space between his car and the racing line, a Safety Car was called out.

Severe punishment for Hamilton

As usual, Lewis Hamilton immediately dived in to take advantage of a much shorter pit stop, as did Antonio Giovinazzi a little later. However, due to the awkward position of Magnussen's car, pit lane was closed to avoid putting the marshals at risk. As a result, the stewards have now punished Hamilton. The British driver will get a 10 second Stop and Go penalty, which will cost the Mercedes driver a lot of time. Giovinazzi has received the same penalty.
