Honda's departure is not just something for Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri to worry about. For the other F1 teams, the departure of Honda is a reason to worry about the future of the expensive engines in F1 and what possible alternatives could be. The team bosses of the other three engine suppliers explained whether Red Bull could be potential customers from 2022.
Toto Wolff does not expect Mercedes to supply engines to Red Bull. "No, for various reasons, the main one being that we are already supplying engines to four teams. We are almost at the point of not being able to supply engines for the whole field, because we simply don't have the capacity for that," explained Mercedes' team boss at the press conference.
Renault and Ferrari open for conversation
Cyril Abiteboul stated that there has not yet been any contact between Red Bull and Renault, but that Renault would certainly be open to a possible deal. "I can't imagine that they don't have a plan A or a plan B. I do expect that we will probably be at the bottom of the list somewhere," joked Renault's team boss.
Red Bull's last option would be Ferrari, but Mattia Binotto doesn't expect Red Bull to make contact soon. "We haven't considered it ourselves yet either. It's something we have to look at. Of course it is up to Red Bull to decide what they want. At the end of the day they have to ask themselves if they want to join us. They are certainly a strong team, I have no doubt about that," Binotto concluded.
