Lewis Hamilton is World Champion for the seventh time. The Brit equals Michael Schumacher's record after the Turkish GP. The Mercedes driver showed his qualities again during the race, by driving for an extremely long time on his tyres.
After the race, the now seven-time world champion responded as follows in front of the cameras: “Thank you, I uh… I am lost for words. I think I have to thank everyone who is here and at the factory. Without them, I would never have been able to do this. I also want to thank team LH for sticking with me, and my family. We dreamed of this when I was young. This is way beyond our dreams," Hamilton said.
Difficult weekend
“We knew this was going to be a difficult weekend. We were on the back foot and did the best we could in qualifying. We learnt a lot. Today we had that small moment at the start of the race and I couldn't get past Seb.
“When Seb drove away from me, I didn't know what was going on. I was checking the temperatures. When Seb pitted I knew that was not the best choice, because the intermediates turned into slicks. I learned my lesson from 2007 by losing the championship in the pitlane. I wanted to have everything under control."
