Helmut Marko fears Red Bull Racing might have some difficulties in Miami. A new major update package will be introduced only in Imola, which could lead to the team having a challenging weekend on the streets of Florida. In his column for Speedweek, the Austrian top advisor writes that the team could gain valuable insights during the first five events of the season. However, there are also concerns about the Miami weekend, given the challenges the track presents, particularly the hotter conditions.
Marko has low expectations for the Miami GP
"We're talking about a completely different circuit here, but especially about higher temperatures. On paper, this isn't an advantage for us," Marko writes.
"In Jeddah, we were eight tenths slower than McLaren in the third practice, under clearly warmer conditions than later in the qualifiers. At that time, we – and also the other teams – expected McLaren to crush everyone. That didn't happen in the end." Max Verstappen eventually finished in second place at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, after a five-second penalty he received after the start.
The 81-year-old Austrian, however, does expect a repeat of that in the state of Florida. "We assume that the conditions in Miami will again be in favour of McLaren. Our current task is to develop a wider operating window for our race car - and to reduce certain weaknesses of the car by the time we race in Europe, so we can improve the base speed of the vehicle," he concluded.
