Although the Young Drivers Test is actually intended to give young drivers experience in a
Formula 1 car, it is increasingly being used as a regular test and
Robert Kubica is the latest evidence of this.
Older drivers
It has already been announced that
Fernando Alonso will be driving for
Renault during the post-season test and now there is another veteran who will be testing in Abu Dhabi next week.
Robert Kubica will drive for
Alfa Romeo with Callum Ilott.
The choices for drivers like Alonso and Kubica for this test will cause quite a stir in the paddock. Not in the least because
Ferrari were not allowed to use
Carlos Sainz during the test days. The same goes for
Sebastian Vettel at Racing Point, to be
Aston Martin.
Also in action during free practice
Kubica will not only take place in the car during the Young Drivers Test. During the first free practice for the
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix he will take over
Antonio Giovinazzi's seat.
“Every time I get to drive this car is an opportunity to bring something to the team," Kubica told
Motorsportweek.com.
"Being behind the wheel this often allows me to build up a consistent feel with the car and that, in turns, helps me deliver better feedback to the team.” Getting the best out of the test
At
Alfa Romeo they are in any case happy that Kubica will be testing.
“To have someone with the skills and technical attitude of Robert will help us get the most out of the day," said team boss Frederic Vasseur.
"He has been a really precious asset throughout the season and will be so in these final outings of 2020 as well.”
