Lewis Hamilton has signed on with Mercedes, but his position is a little uncertain due to the one-year contract. With Valtteri Bottas likely to leave after 2021, the chances are very high that we will see one or two new drivers at the team in 2022. The following comments from Toto Wolff also leave the door wide open.

In an interview with Motorsport-Total.com after the announcement of Lewis Hamilton's contract extension, Wolff stressed that with regard to the new regulations in 2022, it 'doesn't matter' which drivers are in the car during that transition.

Engineers key to success in 2022

This attitude of course clears the way for any new drivers and the following statements can also be interpreted in this way. As far as the new regulations are concerned, success depends entirely on the engineers and then the drivers come into the picture.

"The team has to find its own way when it comes to development. Our job is to make sure we build the best possible car for 2022. And to have the best possible drivers in the car. That's why we want to make a decision during this season, in the summer, on what we see as the best driver pairing for 2022 and beyond," Wolff said.
