Over the past month, there have been many rumours that Volkswagen would be interested in returning to Formula 1 from 2025. Red Bull Racing is one of the contenders for these engines, but Helmut Marko doesn't want to cheer too soon.

Volkswagen and Red Bull

From 2025 onwards, Formula 1 will have new engine regulations and that is of course the ideal moment for new engine suppliers to enter F1. Volkswagen said that they would be interested in entering F1 with for example Porsche or Audi. Red Bull, with their own engine, would then of course be interesting, but Marko is cautious.

''I have spoken with many companies in the past. We are talking to each other, but nothing is definite yet'', Marko clearly holds back at Servus TV. The Austrian does elaborate on the situation at Red Bull, where they are now working on an engine factory to build their own engines from 2022 onwards.

New engine

''Red Bull must first of all be self-sufficient with its own engine. We now only have to maintain the engine from 2022, but we have the technical possibilities to develop the engine ourselves as well, because the new regulations from 2025 should provide a simpler and cheaper engine.''

So Red Bull must now continue to make the engine itself, while with Renault, Mercedes and Ferrari there were also three options to buy. ''We unanimously agreed that this was no longer within the spirit of Red Bull,'' concludes the Red Bull Racing chief.
