This weekend is set to see the Grand Prix at the Emilia Romagna circuit. After an absence of almost 15 years, this track became the surprise hit of 2020, leaving the
FIA no other choice than to put the race on the calendar for this year as well. Below you can read an overview of the Grands Prix hosted at this historic circuit.
Valtteri Bottas was on pole position in 2020, setting the stage for what was to become a chaotic Grand Prix. While Bottas managed to hold on to the lead position, fellow Silver Arrow
Lewis Hamilton was soon passed by
Max Verstappen for P2. However, the Dutchman once again fell victim to his bad marriage with the Italian Grands Prix, as late in the race a tyre issue forced the driver to retire.
A less surprising fact from
Imola concerns Mercedes: with their 1-2 finish, the team sealed their seventh consecutive constructors' title at this circuit in 2020.
San Marino Grand Prix
Formerly known as the San Marino Grand Prix, the race at the historic Italian racetrack has been a familiar name on the Formula One calendar since the 1980s. The 2006 San Marino Grand Prix was won by
Michael Schumacher and
Ferrari after a long and fierce battle between the German and
Fernando Alonso.
Nevertheless, the track will be remembered by many as the fateful place where in 1994 two separate crashes claimed the lives of Roland Ratzenberger and
Ayrton Senna, which still leaves its mark on the sport.
