Red Bull Racing announced Friday afternoon that it has signed Ben Hodgkinson. Hodgkinson comes over from the Mercedes team and will take up the role of technical director at the Austrian racing team. The new addition to Red Bull's team will focus on preparing for the new engine regulations that come into effect in 2025.

There will be an engine freeze in motorsport's premier class from next season and new rules for power units from 2025. Red Bull will drive with Honda engines for the next few years, but will then continue with its own power units. This means that taking over Honda's engine is not just a stopgap measure, but that Red Bull has big plans for the coming years.

Great track record

Hodgkinson is a relatively well-known name. For the past twenty years, he has been part of the Mercedes team, with which he was able to achieve major successes. From 2014 onwards, the Brackley-based German racing team managed to win all world titles in Formula 1, partly thanks to Hodgkinson's efforts.

Christian Horner said earlier this week that Red Bull would only go for the 'best talent' when signing new staff to work on the new engine project. In Hodgkinson, Red Bull's team boss has found the right person.
