Hamilton wants to sign new contract soon: 'That ruined my whole winter'

With three victories from the first four races, Lewis Hamilton has already made an important step towards his eighth world title. A good moment to stop, you might think, but Lewis wants to get round the table with Mercedes quickly to sign a new contract.
Hamilton wants to re-sign
It took a very long time for Hamilton to sign a contract with Mercedes to race at all in 2021. Few people doubted that the contract would come, but the contract was not officially signed until February. Hamilton and Mercedes want to avoid that this year, and Lewis is even hinting at an early new contract.
''We don't want to rush anything but I think we have to be sensible and start conversations. They're very complex, so hopefully soon we can start, as long as it doesn't interfere with the actual job'', Hamilton told the BBC after the Spanish Grand Prix. Lewis wants to avoid the situation of last year in any case.
Future at Mercedes
''We never want to be in the position that we were in in January, in February. It ruined my whole winter and I'm sure it wasn't helpful for Toto's, in terms of being out to be off and relaxed, so it felt like we didn't really have much of a break.''
So Hamilton doesn't want to rush it, but he does indicate that there should be clarity around the summer break. ''We still have 19 races to do, but it would be great to get something in place before the break so then we could, again, be in that break and have a clear picture of the future'', Hamilton concluded.
