Nyck de Vries has clinched the world title in the thrilling and bizarre final race of Formula E. After his three biggest title rivals crashed out of the race, all he had to do was maintain his position, but even that proved to be a challenge in a crazy race.
Bizarre Formula E race in which several title contenders crash
The race was flagged off almost immediately after a huge crash at the start, with title contender Mitch Evans failing to move from his spot and Edoardo Mortara crashing into the back of his stationary car. As a result, two major title contenders dropped out, and the race was halted.
After the restart behind the safety car polesitter Stoffel Vandoorne took the lead, but after a few meters it was the turn of the third title contender. Jake Dennis blocked his car and drove into the wall, clearing the way to the title for De Vries.
De Vries manages to stay out of the chaos and takes the title.
After this it was Nato who managed to get to the front and take the lead. Moments later, it was again time for a safety car: Antonio Felix da Costa, who also had a chance at the title, was driven out of the race by Lucas di Grassi.
De Vries drove a strong race from 13th on the grid, and eventually crossed the finish line in eighth place. That was enough to take the title, despite some moments during the race when he was almost involved in a crash.
