Formula 1 hopes to return to a 'normal season' in 2022. It's a statement that the management also made about the 2021 season, but little came of it. Stefano Domenicali, however, is sure that next year they will be able to break records.

F1 season ends in November

In 2021 it had to happen. There had to be a new record for the number of races in one season. However, F1 had to downgrade to 22 races in this season, because it wasn't as normal a year as hoped. The coronavirus is still causing major problems in many countries, so several races were cancelled.

The hope is that things will be better in 2022 and so Domenicali is aiming for another record. ''The calendar will be done with 23 races,'' the Formula One CEO tells Sky Sports. The F1 season will be shorter than usual in terms of time frame, though. In fact, in mid-November, Domenicali wants to complete the season already, to take into account the World Cup in Qatar.

Sprint races in 2022

Another important part of the new calendar is the sprint qualifiers. So far in 2021, two race weekends have been organised with a sprint qualifying on Saturday, and we can expect that again in 2022. Domenicali let it be known that the majority were positive about the new format, but that there might be some changes.

''I can say we will not go everywhere with the Sprint qualy format. It is something we want to keep for one-third of the races more or less and to connect with a certain different way of giving rewards and points and to connect with specific circuits that as you know would make the difference'', the CEO concludes. According to the CEO, the new calendar will not be presented before 15 October.
