Time lost at double yellow flag: F1 drivers very happy with new rule
- GPblog.com
During the United States Grand Prix, times driven during a double yellow flag situation will be crossed out immediately. It is a new rule that causes a lot of satisfaction for the drivers.
New rule for double yellow flags
Despite two yellow flags, Fernando Alonso set a faster time during qualifying in Turkey. The Spaniard had to pass the stewards but was not given a penalty. This caused, not for the first time, a lot of surprise in the paddock. The rule in this kind of situation is clear: you have to reduce speed, but how can drivers set a faster time and still get away with it?
Michael Masi has discussed this issue with the advisory group and all the teams, and a new rule has emerged. From now on, a time-driven during a double yellow flag situation will be taken away immediately. This change in the rules is well received by the drivers.
Satisfied F1 drivers
''Now it's clear to everyone if it wasn't before. But this way it removes all doubts. As soon as you get a double yellow flag you can just get off the gas as much as possible and prepare for the next lap because your current lap will be deleted anyway'', said Charles Leclerc according to Motorsport.com.
Nicholas Latifi is also happy with the new rule. ''This makes it crystal clear for everyone.'' Yuki Tsunoda also thinks it will be safer because of the new rule. ''It's clear now that your time will be deleted anyway at double yellow, so everyone will automatically go off the gas. That improves safety, so I think it's a good idea'', the Japanese driver concludes.
