Fernando Alonso has decided to participate in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) alongside his current Formula 1 commitments. The WEC begins next weekend, and he will take part in all eight rounds driving for Toyota.

The nine races in 11 weeks begin this weekend in Baku, and also includes Le Mans 24 race in France. Whilst having one eye on McLaren, the Spaniard has had to prepare his own body for the challenge.

“I’m as prepared as I can be,” Alonso said.

“We’ll see if we can make a podium this weekend, make a podium next weekend and that would be even better.

“It’ll be a new experience and hopefully a good one.”

Alonso competed in a second Formula last season when he drove the Indy 500. For this, he took a week out of F1, and his McLaren seat was covered by Jensen Button.

But this season, the challenge increases as he competes for full time in the WEC and F1. Fernando Alonso was asked how he prepared for the challenge.

“I’m in energy saving mode every day! I planned to go to the gym, and have a little bit of exercise this morning.

“I woke up, I was not feeling 100 percent - I was 90 percent, so I did nothing, I stayed a little bit more in bed.”
