Fernando Alonso believes that there should be no tolerance for exceeding track in F1. The Spaniard was the first driver to fall foul of the rule in Mexico that meant his time was deleted for exceeding track limits at turn 11 but believes that the rule is a positive for Formula One.
Alonso, who is also competing in the WEC 2018/19 super season, said that he preferred the approach in the WEC in that all abuses of track limits would be penalised.
“I prefer when it’s zero tolerance,” said Alonso.
“In Fuji (WEC) we crossed the white line by one centimetre and they delete the lap time, and we were not on pole position because of that.
"We didn’t gain time because it was a correction like here – you have a big moment, you end up off track, and they delete the lap. But the rules say if you are over that red and white line they delete the lap.
“They don’t consider if it was a mistake, a correction, or a pure gain in time, it’s just the line is there, and if you cross the line they delete the lap.
"They do it in other series and it works fine, so I’m happy with how it works.”
More often than not, cars will run over the kerbs and white lines in order to carry more speed through the corners but currently, only certain corners are policed by the FIA and race stewards at their discretion.
