After already logging the fastest time in training, Fernando Alonso has now taken pole position in the WEC on Spa Francorchamps, as Toyota took all three top three places in qualifying.
Just F1 doesn't do it anymore for Alonso. He's hunting for the triple crown these days. The triple crown includes a win at Le Mans, a win at the Indy 500 and a win at the Monaco Grand Prix (to some it's to win an F1 championship instead of Monaco). Alonso has won both an F1 title and Monaco, but he wants more. He already tried the Indy 500 once and did well, until his Honda engine, in typical fashion, broke down.
This year he joined the Toyota WEC team to compete (and win) at Le Mans, but he has to get some practice in first in earlier WEC rounds.
Back to the qualifying for the six hours of Spa Francorchamps, Alonso wasn't happy with his driving, despite snatching pole.
"I dropped some time in sector two," he told Motorsport.com.
"We were driving on old tyres in the third training and we were only seven seconds slower, which means I wasn't fast enough today.
Alonso does realize that in a long-distance race, qualifying doesn't have as big of an importance as in F1, as there's a lot of time during the race to rectify any mistakes.
"Thankfully, qualifying isn't so important in this sport and our car is more calibrated for the race.
"So it's going to be a fun race."
