For a driver who did not yet have a permanent seat in
Formula 1,
Nyck de Vries has racked up a lot of mileage in the 2022 season. When he finally joins AlphaTauri at the end of the year, he will thereby set a record: it will be the fifth
F1 team the driver boards this year.
De Vries already sets a record in F1
It has happened before that a driver changes teams in the middle of an F1 season, but never before has someone been in action for so many different teams in the same year. De Vries will therefore already set a record in
Formula 1 even before he permanently joins AlphaTauri, where he will get a permanent seat next year alongside Yuki Tsunoda.
As a reserve driver at Mercedes, De Vries got several chances to show himself in free practice this year. He came into action for Mercedes, but was also deployed at Aston Martin and
Williams. At Monza, the timing proved perfect as
Alexander Albon's illness gave the Dutchman the chance to finish the weekend in his place.
In doing so, he made a big impression, and after speaking to his good friend
Max Verstappen, a meeting with
Helmut Marko ensued. AlphaTauri had found a replacement for
Pierre Gasly, who switches to Alpine next year. That team in turn provided De Vries with an F1 test in the A521 in September, bringing the tally to four F1 teams. Number five will be added in December when De Vries will take his seat in the AlphaTauri car for the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi.
