Bob Bell pitches idea to have reverse starting grid

The new aerodynamics rules should be making things more exciting in the F1 from next season on, but Renault's technical director Bob Bell has a different idea to make things more interesting; a reverse grid.

Yes, it's exactly what you think it is. The best car starts last, the worst car starts at pole position. As the current top teams are only looking to improve one-lap speed rather than overtaking cars, this would shake things up in a massive way.

"That way, it suddenly becomes important to be able to get through the field," Bell explains to Motorsport.

"As long as we don't think of anything, the teams won't be incentivized to change things."

At the moment, teams just focus on getting ahead of their opponents. Once that happens, it's just about seeing out the race. It shouldn't be this simple.

"The fact is that we develop cars largely based on the ideal flow of air; when they drive by themselves.

"For designers, it's all about maximizing qualifying laps, especially with the top three teams that presume that they'll start at the front.

"Overtaking isn't necessary on Sundays."
