McLaren's boss Zak Brown confirms he won't rule out the chance of asking Fernando Alonso to help out in testing the MCL34. The Spaniard confirmed he would leave Formula 1 after the 2018 season to achieve goals elsewhere.
Alonso will continue racing with McLaren as they will partner to compete in the Indy500. Brown confirmed they would love to use Alonso's vital experience in the Formula 1 world as well.
"Yeah, I wouldn't rule that [testing help] out. We're still working through [the plan]. We know we're doing Indianapolis together," Brown said in an interview on GrandPrix247.
"We'd like him to be part of our racing programme because we're also reviewing other forms of motorsport which have been widely noted, World Endurance, a full season of IndyCar, and he's certainly not done the driving. So yeah, we're working through what a long-term relationship could look like."
"Fernando's extremely intelligent, very experienced, loves Formula 1, loves race tracks. if he's not at a WEC race, or not at Formula 1 race he's at an IndyCar race or is on go-kart tracks so I think we'll have a hard time keeping him away from the race track."
As well as racing, Brown confirms that Alonso has a deep interest in the engineering side of the garage. Perhaps in the future, Alonso may well make his own car, but for now, he wants to help push the McLaren team on.
“He likes the engineering development side, he’s not one of these drivers: just give me the steering wheel and I’ll drive. He likes the whole group. Indianapolis together was an example. He wants to know what’s going on, not just tell me where I need to be at the race track," he added.
