Criticism of Jos Verstappen: 'Shows he boils up very easily'

In his column for Verstappen.com, Jos Verstappen criticized Red Bull Racing's strategy at the Monaco Grand Prix on Monday. Journalists from The Race respond to Verstappen senior's article.

Verstappen senior did not sound satisfied after the race in Monaco. He believes that Red Bull did not help his son to get to the front and that ten points of Max Verstappen were thrown away in the championship. The strategy mainly helped Sergio Perez to his victory.

At The Race Gary Anderson and Scott Mitchell, among others, assess the criticism of Verstappen senior. "I think Jos is just venting his anger at everything. It is just showing that he boils up very easily. Actually, if you look back at his driving he was the same then. Jos, it’s time to zip it and be happy for the success your son is achieving. Otherwise, it is very easy to alienate the people who matter", Anderson writes in the website's column.

'Jos Verstappen a difficult figure'

Opinions are divided about Perez and whether he is a title contender who can challenge Verstappen this year, but journalists agree that Verstappen senior should not interfere with the team's actions.

"This is exactly what I expect of Jos. He has long been an imposing, polarising and difficult figure in the background at Red Bull and has now made it very clear, in public, that Red Bull can expect trouble unless it does everything to help Max win. Even if it means harming his team-mate’s prospects", Mitchell says.

Unfortunately, Jos acts in a rash way. He should try to analyse more, try to be rational about it. Max is a hell of a driver, he is fast and complete, and this sort of meddling by his father is not doing him any favours. It could create tension, and that would be a shame. Checo and Max make a great pair of mates, while the team is performing excellent at a strategic level, while also providing them with a car that can fight for both titles. In short: don't ruin the good atmosphere!

Funny…, I don’t recall Antonio Perez (Checo’s Father and greatest fan) having a public tantrum because his son was asked to step aside for Max. But then, Mr. Perez is a very jovial and friendly sort who is justifiably, very proud of Checo and does not live vicariously through his son like Jos.

I wouldn't pay much attention to a couple of Brit journalists have to say they paint Verstappen the villain every chance they get like with Vettel, Rosberg, Alonso, Schumacher. Everything Jos said was true. RBR cost themselves an easy 1-2. RBR strategy was conservative a bad, but Ferrari's was plain terrible.

I wonder what's happened if Hamilton;s father would have done what Jos Verstappen is doing...

Lewis's father told him to stand strong and congratulate Max and Jos after getting totally screwed last year. There is the difference between the two fathers.

I can yell you where this is gping. Jos, we need to get you under contract if you're hanging around the garage so much. (In the details) of said contract will be something like contract is null and void if any act/actions occur detrimental to the RBR team, it's drivers and or the brand. He'll say I don't need a contract...they'll say then you can't be near the garage our new insurance policy demads all around the garage be an employee of RBR. That's example #1 of how they can rid him...... Example #2..... And they don't want this to happen...is approach Max and say you either get your Dad out of here or we will do it for you. He's creating an unhealthy work place and we're giving you the chance to get him away from the team or we'll do it for you. Eventually #3 ...the nuclear option.... We have many drivers in the pipeline and under contract an feel our car and engine are in a place right now to make pretty much any decent driver competitive. Alex Albon has been showing good pace in a Williams. I bet he'd like another chance on thr "A" team driving with Perez. One of the above three will happen if Jos keeps looming in the shadows. You write that down.

I think red bull is lucky to have him on there team. He says what he thinks and being punished for that is sad. Unfortunately that is what is happening in a lot of other medium to big (non racing) companies. At least they should consider his opinion in the process as they should do with any opinion from someone off the team (mechanic, PR manager, driver etc etc). Jos verstappen played the biggest part of what max is able to do these years. Racing is optimisation, you can't be happy with 99%, that's for 2nd or lower.

Jos is not part of the Red Bull management. He is Max's father and should stay well clear of airing his grievances on social media. He is a hot head and will only cause his son and the team issues. Perez i imagine will be having a talk with Horner over Jos influence on the team.

Ferrarifanatic 01 June 2022 at 06:48+ 14286

I agree. You never hear Mr. Perez complaining when team orders are given to benefit Max!

Dana Stoler 02 June 2022 at 08:47+ 87

Ever hear of the saying don't air dirty laundry in public? He can say what he wants in private, but in public has to be diplomatic and loyal to the team. That'd how it should be in any job!

Rob01 31 May 2022 at 18:13+ 6151

Jos is doing his son no favors. Going to the media to air his concerns is only going to create a dislike of Max being associated with those types of comments.
