Daniel Ricciardo has defended his move to Renault and rejects the claims that he only moved to the team for a large pay cheque. The Aussie hopes to do what Lewis Hamilton did at Mercedes and has said he has an "obligation to make it work." Renault has started to improve after a slow start to the season and they will hope to impress at their home Grand Prix later on today.
"It was the biggest thing I have done, even bigger than the move to Europe [as a teenager]," he told the Guardian when asked about his move to Renault. "I didn't feel there was much room to build with Red Bull anymore. I thought there was more risk staying.
"Renault excited me. What Lewis did with Mercedes, if I was able to do that – that was instant motivation for me. One thing I really didn't want was for people to say I just signed for Renault to chase a pay cheque.
"That wasn't the truth. I feel I have an obligation to make it work."
Ricciardo has recently started to have a run of good results and it looks like Renault are a real contender for the top of the midfield. Starting from 8th, the Aussie will hope to get some solid points at the race later on today.
