Carlos Sainz recorded the quickest lap-time of the day with a 1:17.144 in his McLaren on a day where Sebastian Vettel crashed out of the morning session for Ferrari.

There was a 40-minute delay for Vettel after crashing out at Turn 3 about mid-way into the morning session, leaving Ferrari pretty helpless for the majority of the day.

With an hour remaining, the Italian team released a statement on its Twitter page saying they are doing their best to try and solve some of the issues that were on the car as a result of the crash... and, they did return on track, but for the last five minutes with Charles Leclerc doing an outlap before pitting once more for Scuderia.

Vettel and Valtteri Bottas were sent out immediately as the morning got underway, with both drivers eager to bring their teams some more data.

Also, Max Verstappen was quickly out and he set the initial benchmark of the morning with a swift 1:19.983 but Sainz quickly leapfrogged his former Toro Rosso team-mate with an impressive 1:18.878.

Vettel ran Sainz close, narrowly missing out on the top-spot by three-tenths of a second, but the Spanish McLaren man just kept improving and smashed out a 1:17.144 - a time that stayed at the top of the leaderboard throughout the day.

It looked as if Vettel's time - despite the Ferrari man not featuring for the majority of Wednesday - would remain the second fastest of the day, but Racing Point driver Sergio Perez had other ideas.

A sensational lap from Perez with just 15 minutes of the day remaining - 1:17.842 - just the second man, alongside Sainz, to dip below the 1 minute 18 second-mark.

Elsewhere, Williams had another productive day, with Robert Kubica completing over 120 laps, which surpassed yesterday's total for the Grove-based team. Some real progress has been made by Williams after the disastrous week they suffered last week.

Mercedes showed more pace today than they have recently with its drivers Bottas setting a 1:18.941 and world champion Lewis Hamilton marginally off his team-mate with a 1:18.943.
